College-Level Examination Program (CLEP)

The College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) consists of computer-based exams that enable students to earn college credit by examination. Anyone may take CLEP exams to demonstrate his or her college-level competency no matter how this knowledge has been acquired.

Each CLEP exam is 90 to 120 minutes long (depending on the exam) and, except for College Composition, is made up primarily of multiple-choice questions.

The results are available immediately following the exam, with the exception of College Composition.

The essay portion of the College Composition exam is scored twice a month. If taking the College Composition exam close to the time of graduation, please allow sufficient time for the results to be received.

CLEP has a policy that candidates may not repeat an exam of the same title within six months. Scores of exams repeated earlier than six months will be canceled and test fees forfeited.

No limit is placed on the number of semester hours that can be gained through CLEP exams, although these hours do not count towards ODU’s residency requirements.

With a CLEP score of 50 or higher, the ODU credit and equivalency posted below will be applied to the student’s ODU transcript. All credit is listed on transcripts as ‘Z’ (credit by exam) and is not factored into the ODU grade point average.

The Business Office will bill $20.00 per credit hour to cover the cost of evaluating and recording CLEP results with passing scores.

For more information and help with preparation to take an exam, visit the College Board website at www.collegeboard.com/clep. Or visit www.cleptestquestions.com, which provides free study aid to those taking CLEP exams.

Consult with your academic advisor to be sure the CLEP exam you choose is appropriate for your program. Make certain you will not be taking an exam that is equivalent to either transfer or ODU credit you have already completed.

You must make Ohio Dominican University the score recipient so your results will come directly to ODU. Credit will not be posted until the official score report has been received from CLEP (which takes approximately two weeks, with the exception of College Composition, which may take up to four weeks due to the scoring of the essay portion of the exam.)

Columbus State Community College (CSCC) is ODU's local test center and is located in their Center for Workforce Development. All CSCC information is subject to change without notice.

The fee for each exam is $77 (paid to CLEP) plus a $40 administration fee (paid to CSCC).

Exams are available by appointment. Hours vary; call (614) 287-5750 to arrange an exam time.
