GESTURE

Gesture , Ohio Dominican University's literary journal, publishes excellent and distinctive works of written and visual art created by members of the ODU community. 

Gesture is committed to diversity in authorship, subject matter, language, and genres. Each annual issue reflects the creativity and preeminence of the university while supporting the mission of Ohio Dominican.

Gesture is sponsored by ODU's Department of English and Sigma Tau Delta, the English Honors society.

Students work with faculty advisors to review submissions and edit and publish the journal. Students learn about the publishing and editing process and the field of creative writing.
  • In addition to the pieces selected through the review process, Gesture also honors several student award winners.
  • The Freshman Writing Award is awarded to the writer(s) of an outstanding essay submitted to ODU’s freshmen composition courses as nominated by the instructors.
    The Sister Maryanna Childs Award is awarded to an outstanding essay in an upper division course, as nominated by the instructors. 
  • The Judith C. Mitchell Award is awarded to the best piece of creative writing published each year in Gesture.

Gesture welcomes contributions by Ohio Dominican University students, faculty, and staff in a variety of categories. Look for Gesture in the Quick Links in MyODU.

All submissions undergo a review process by student editors, faculty advisors and volunteer readers.

Sigma Tau Delta


Sigma Tau Delta is an international honors society for students in English and Integrated Language Arts, sponsored by the English Department. Members participate in a variety of activities, such as movie nights, the annual Scrabble tournament, and more. Sigma Tau Delta is also primarily responsible for the publication of Gesture, Ohio Dominican's literary journal.

Students are also invited to attend the national Sigma conference where they network with other English majors, faculty and writers.
