ODU Student-Veteran Stories
About ODU's PATRIOTS Program
Ohio Dominican first launched the PATRIOTS Program more than 25 years ago to meet the educational needs of returning Vietnam veterans. Through PATRIOTS, veterans can achieve their academic goals, pursuing either an associate's, bachelor's or master's degree. The University reintroduced the PATRIOTS Program in response to the Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008, also known as the Post-9/11 GI Bill®.
ODU's PATRIOTS Program offers free academic and mental wellness counseling to veterans to ensure their smooth transition from combat to classroom to career. Veterans enjoy priority registration, and can sign up for classes on the first day that registration opens. The program is reinforced by an active advisory committee made up of faculty, veteran alumni and student veterans. The entire University community celebrates the service and sacrifice of our veterans twice each academic year with Veterans Appreciation Day linked to home football and basketball games. ODU is a full participant in the Yellow Ribbon Program and has a full-time liaison with the Veterans Administration. The program is led by a retired Army Major General.
GI Bill® is a registered trademark of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). More information about education benefits offered by VA is available at the official U.S. government Web site at https://www.benefits.va.gov/gibill.
PATRIOTS Program Mission Statement
The Ohio Dominican University Patriots Program is recognized as the premier veteran
friendly institution of higher education in Central Ohio.
Policies and Practices to Achieve Mission Accomplishment
Inform – Inform veterans of the value of higher education and the educational benefits they have earned from the federal and state governments and additional benefits offered by Ohio Dominican University.
Recruit – Attract veteran students to ODU by understanding their education/career objectives. We will forego application fees and maximize transfer credits and financial assistance such as the Yellow Ribbon Program and ODU’s Salute to Service Scholarship Program.
Nurture – ODU is committed to insuring that every enrolled veteran graduates as planned. Free academic tutoring, in-house mental health counseling, and a committed faculty that is aware of student veterans issues support this commitment. Additionally, ODU commits to never penalize a veteran student financially or academically for absence due to activation or deployment orders.
Outreach – The Patriots Program will serve as a link to military and veterans organizations
(state and federal veterans affairs, military branches including reserve and National
Guard, and volunteer organizations). The Program will also sponsor military related
educational programs open to the public and serve as a resource on military and veterans
issues for all the Catholic high schools in Central Ohio.
