Obtaining the Articles & Books You Need

How do I find ARTICLES for my research?

Use the ODU Library databases for your research. From Articles & Databases, choose your discipline for the best databases available for your research. For online access off main campus to ODU Library databases and ebooks, make sure you use your last name and the last 7 digitis of your ODU student ID number.

How do I get articles that I cannot access in full text from an ODU Library database?

Submit an interlibrary loan request via ILLiad. For more information about interlibrary loan, visit the interlibrary loan page or read the library's Guide to Interlibrary Loan.

For Distance Cohorts and for Distant Learners located outside of Franklin County, library staff will post the article to your online ILLiad account as soon as possible, whether the article is available in ODU Library's collection or in another library. In the rare event that an article is not conducive to scanning, it will be sent via UPS.

There is typically no charge for regular interlibrary loan services; however, there will be a $15 charge if the article requires document delivery services. No charge will be placed on your account without your approval to pursue the item.

How do I get BOOKS, EBOOKS, and VIDEOS?

Distance Learners located in Franklin County Ohio are entitled to the same library services as traditional campus patrons. Search the ODU Library Catalog first. If ODU does not have what you need, try the OhioLINK Library Catalog. If OhioLINK does not have what you need, you can submit an interlibrary loan request via ILLiad. Both OhioLINK and interlibrary loan items will be available to be picked up from the ODU Library Circulation Services counter. Any OhioLINK item can also be picked up at any OhioLINK library--just specify your pickup location when you submit the request.

Distance Learners located in Ohio but outside of Franklin County should use (1) the ODU Library Catalog for finding electronic (online) books available through ODU Library and (2) the OhioLINK Library Catalog first for books, videos, and other materials. The Pickup Anywhere (PUA) service will allow you to request a book or video from any OhioLINK library to be delivered to any other OhioLINK library in a matter of a few days, as long as the item is not available at ODU Library.

Distance Learners outside of Ohio, should identify the books or videos they need using the OhioLINK Library CatalogWorldCat, or any other method (find a library near you) and then simply submit an interlibrary loan request via ILLiad if you are unable to find the item in a library near you.

  • ODU Library staff will review the request to see if it can be honored
  • If possible, the item will be either pulled from our shelves and sent to you via UPS or obtained through Interlibrary Loan and mailed to you.
  • Please allow at least two weeks for delivery in the event that the item will need to be obtained from another library first.
  • ODU Library will pay all shipping costs; it is the responsibility of the eLearning patron to make sure the item is returned to the ODU Library by the date due.
