At Ohio Dominican University, we offer the opportunity to participate in a variety of performing ensembles, music courses, music lessons, and a music minor that allow our students to remain active and excel in music at the collegiate level.
The Ohio Dominican University Marching Band is a Show Band that performs at all home football games, high school band contests, community events, parades, and ODU functions. Each year the Marching Band provides the students with a performing opportunity that is rich with depth and originality, yet able to rock the crowd leading our Panthers to victory. The Marching Band plays a wide variety of music: from rock to jazz and classical to country; that enables us to give the audience an unforgettable audio experience.
Students interested in the Marching Band must be enrolled at ODU and in MUS 122 for the fall term. The Marching Band rehearses anywhere from 4-6 hours per week and performs on Saturdays. Interested students must have some previous instrumental experience. All students, regardless of ability level, will have the opportunity to participate in the Marching Band. Auditions will be held the first day of band camp for all available spots in the guard and auxiliary. Band camp will take place the week prior to the first day of school.
Another ensemble at the university is the Ohio Dominican University Conert Band. This group focuses on learning traditional band music as well as symphonic arrangements, concert marches, show tune and movie arrangements, and original student compositions. The Concert Band serves as a major contributor to university events, recruitment through touring, commencement, and the annual spring concert. Like the Marching Band, any student at ODU can participate in the Concert Band. There will be a small seating audition the first week of the spring term that is used to place students in the ensemble based on current ability levels. Students must be enrolled in MUS 122 during the spring term to participate.
After football season, the thrill of cheering the sports team to victory does not end. ODU students continue to have the opportunity to be a part of the sports tradition at the university. During the winter and spring sports season, the Pep Band serves as the 6th man giving our sports team a real home field advantage by keeping the crowd rowdy with the biggest hits on the radio and in sports today.
The opportunities for performing are endless at ODU. We have the option for students to create small ensembles such as a jazz combo, woodwind or brass quintets, like-instrument choirs, percussion ensembles, and many more. The students are also able to take private lessons and give a recital on any instrument with the consent of the approved instructor.
Are there scholarships available? Yes, if the student participates in both Marching Band and Concert Band, then that student may be eligible for a scholarship. I haven't been playing very long. Can I still participate? Yes, instrumentalist of all ability levels will be able to participate in the program. Is there an audition involved? There will be no audition for enrollment in the programs; however, there will be a playing test for seating arrangements in the ensembles. My sport conflicts with Concert Band. Can I still do Marching Band? Yes, students may participate in as many ensembles as they would like. Are there music classes available? Yes, we currently offer a minor in music that is available to students majoring in any field at ODU. What other performance opportunities are available? Depending on the size and ability of the groups, there will be opportunities to play at high school and college events from marching band shows to professional conferences. Some of the groups may even tour to promote the university at high schools and for prospective students.
