ASSOCIATE OF ARTS IN GERONTOLOGY
To meet the ever-increasing need for Gerontologist, Ohio Dominican University is introducing the newest Gerontology Program in Central Ohio. Between 2008 and 2018, job opportunities in the Family Services Industry will increase by 50%. ODU’s program is tailored to meet the career demand and reflects the University’s century of educational excellence.
Examines the aging process by integrating content related to the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of human functioning. Building on a liberal arts base, the course of study assists students to relate and respond effectively to the diverse needs of older persons.
- 2 year degree with 64 semester hours
- Course work includes bioethics, politics of aging, human behavior, and the gerontology profession.
- Creates a base for students wanting to continue with either a Bachelors in Business Administration or Bachelors of Arts in Social Work.
- Prepares graduates to apply to be on the Registry of Social Worker Assistants
- Curriculum includes hands on field work.
Knowledge
- Identify issues related to grief and loss, transitions, and adaptations to change over the life cycle.
Identify ways to ascertain the health status and physical functioning of older adults.
Identify how policies, regulations and programs impact older adults and their care givers, particulary among historically disadvantaged populations.
Skills
- Establish rapport and maintain an effective working relationship with older adults and family members.
- Relate concepts and theories of biological and social aging to gerontological practice
- Relate theories and perspectives including person-in-environment and social justice to practice with older adults.
